Q: Is there a minimum speed at which I can
connect?
A: Yes. Your minimum connection speed depends on the minimum speed
your modem will connect.
Q: Why
do I connect at 28.8 with a 56k modem?
A: The most common reason is due to the lines your
connection is running over from your local Telephone Company. You may be in an area
where the switch from your local telephone company may not have been upgraded to
accommodate higher speed connections. Be assured the local telephone company is in
the process up upgrading all switches based on availability of resources.
Other Things you can try to better your speed:
Updating the drivers and firmware for your modem from the manufacturer's web site.
Make sure if your modem has a setting for compression that you turn it on.
If your modem will allow you to choose a connection speed set it for 115,200 or as high as it will allow.
More Tips:
If there is a telephone, answering machine, etc., plugged into the back of the modem, unplug it from the back of the modem. The modem is supposed to ignore devices plugged into it when it is online, but that is not always the case.
Try disconnecting additional telephony devices (fax, phones, answering machines, alarm systems, etc.) from the phone line, even if they're in a different room. I've heard from readers whose connect speed jumped 10K when they unplugged a fax machine or cordless phone in another room.
Also try running the phone line directly from the back of the modem to the wall, without passing through surge suppressors, splitters, phone line extenders, etc. This is a basic and useful step in modem troubleshooting.
If all else fails, do a complete shut down of your computer, unplug the
power cord on the back of your computer, count to 15. Then reconnect
all cords and restart the computer.
Also, be sure to run a legal Anti-virus
program and update it daily.
Q: What
is the fastest rate I can connect?
A: This depends on the lines your connection is running over
from your local Telephone Company. You may be in an area where the switch from your
local telephone company may not have been upgraded to accommodate higher speed
connections. Be assured the local telephone company is in the process up upgrading
all switches based on availability of resources. We can accommodate speeds for
regular dial up (14.4k to 56k), ISDN Dial-On-Demand and Dedicated up to 128k, T-1 up to
1.544Mbps, DSL & Cable. Phone Service and calling cards are also
now available.
Q: Are there any
setup costs?
A: No. There is a $0.54 processing fee,
on charges less than $10.00 from PrePaid Internet Services.
Q: What services
can I access?
A: You can use telnet, FTP, Gopher, WWW, e-mail and all
other publicly available resources on the World Wide Web.
Q: Why can't I connect?
A: Your connection may not be configured properly. For Technical
Assistance with your Dial Up service please call

A: A domain name is a unique name that is registered with
the NSI Registry (the organization that controls domain names) and is used to locate a
web site. This name (www.name.com, .net, .org, .edu, etc...) is assigned a unique IP
(Internet Protocol) address by (GA Link). This
assignment of number to name allows computers on the WWW to locate your web
site. Please note: GA Link does not use shared IP hosting.
Your site will have its own fixed IP address which is required for true
security. Please call (706) 724-4638 or email us Info@GA Link.net for more information. Signup

Q: How do I get a
Domain Name?
A: A domain name is registered with the
NSI Registry (the organization that controls domain names). You may register any name you choose provided it is not already
registered. Domain names registered must be routed by your Internet Hosting Provider
(GA Link) within 30 days to avoid
revocation by NSI Registry. There is an annual routing fee from GA Link
for
this portion of the process, in the amount of $45. This gives you a
fixed IP address for true security and quicker name resolution, rather than
shared hosting like some providers.

Q: How do I transfer files to my Web Site?
A: Many programs and methods are available to
transfer files to your web site. the easiest way is browser
based. Simply open your internet browser then on the Address Line (not
the Search Line) enter ftp://www.yourdomainname.com,.net,.org,etc. You will
be prompted for your user id and password. When the screen opens you
will see all the files and folders for your site/directory. Simply
copy & paste from your computer to the server just like you would on your
local computer. You can also right click in a blank area and create
new folders or select existing folders to delete, rename, etc. If for
some reason you can not see your folders or files you may need to adjust
your browser settings. Select Tools, Internet Options then select the
Advanced tab. Make sure that "enable folder view" is checked under the
Browsing section and "use passive ftp (for firewall and DSL modem
capability) is checked. Then click Apply button and OK button.
You may also need to clear your cache and history in the browser. Then
close the browser and reopen. You should now be able to connect to
your FTP location.

[Email Questions]
Q: What about
e-mail?
A: Hosting accounts are assigned 5 e-mail accounts, with
the ability to add more addresses for a small monthly fee. Additional e-mail
addresses are available for $2.00 each.
Q: How do I
get an e-mail address at my own Domain Name?
A: To have an e-mail address at your own Domain Name
(you@www.name.com, .net, .org, .edu, etc...) requires that your have your own Domain Name
registered with NSI Registry and assigned an IP (Internet Protocol) address by
your Internet Hosting Provider (GA Link). You will also need to have an E-mail
Server. An E-mail Server is used to host e-mail for Domains. There is a charge
of $20 per month from GA Link for an E-mail Server.
Our E-mail Server allows
for unlimited e-mail addresses and 10 mb e-mail sizes.
It is web-based, which means it is accessible from any computer with Internet access which makes
it great for people on the go or away from home. You simply type in the address for
your server in the web browser and log on with your e-mail user id and password.
Your mail will remain on the server until you either download it from home or work or
delete it. (Similar to HotMail and Yahoo only much faster). Also, if you are
the Administrator of the E-mail Server, you have the ability to add, delete or modify
e-mail addresses as needed via the web interface. Mail Server will
also work with all major email clients such as Outlook, Outlook Express,
Netscape, etc.

Q: I get
attachments from AOL users, but how do I open the attachments?
A: PLEASE - never open an attachment from
anyone you do not know and even then have a good Anti-Virus
Software that is updated with the latest virus definitions.
Sometimes is is a good rule to ask the person you know if they really sent
it to you BEFORE opening. When you open the email, double-click on the attachment.
If you see another copy of the same email look for the line that reads
"attachments" double-click here also. After a few seconds you should
be prompted to either save or open the attachment - make a choice to save the attachment
but be sure to note where the file is being saved. If you get still another copy of
the same message rather than the save or open prompt double-click the attachment line
again. Continue repeating until you get to the root forwarded
message. This happens because of the differential in email programming by AOL
internally (sometimes referred to as proprietary). AOL attachments become
"nested" especially when the email is forwarded from other or multiple users.
Q: How do I check
my mail?
A: The easiest way is to choose "EMAIL" from the
link to the left. If your address is on the GA Link Mail Server enter your
user id and password under the GA Link Mail option and click the logon button. If
your address is on one of the other listed servers to the right of the page that appears
after you choose "EMAIL" from the link above and to the left, enter your user id
and password under the Other mail Servers option and click the logon button. To use
the mail option in your browser, you must go into the mail settings and enter your user id
and password along with the outgoing smtp server name of mail.galink.net and the incoming
smtp server of mail.galink.net. Please call (706) 724-4638 or email us Info@GA Link.net for more information.

Q: How do I cut down on SPAM?
A: The easiest way
to avoid SPAM is by following some simple rules and using a good SPAM
filtering software. GA Link uses SPAM and Virus filtering software but
unfortunately, nothing is 100%. View
more detail on this now.
Q: How do I set up SPAM rules?
A: To set up Spam Rules:
Outlook/Outlook Express -
Open your Outlook/Outlook Express program
Select Message, Create Rule From Message or Block Sender
Block Sender will allow you to add the address appearing in the From Line to a
Blocked List
Create Rule from Message will allow you to create a rule based on either;
content, subject or sender
Follow the instructions on the screen to select the options you desire
You can then Apply the Rule and Select Apply Now to test the rule
IMail -
Open the IMail web page for your mail server - this will be either your
domain of mail.yourdomain.com, .net or .org or
our main mail server of mail.galink.net
Type the address for your mail server in the address line of your Internet
browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.)
Login to your email account
Select Change Processing Rules from the Personal Account Options on the top
right drop down menu
Please be aware that you may see some objectionable words listed in some of
the rules
Unfortunately, it is the only way to get rid of those by actually listing the
word to filter out
Select Add Rule from the left menu
Select a Field (click the drop down arrow) And an Option of Contains or Does
not Contain
Type the word or words or email address in the Phrase box Ignore the two boxes
for Case and Search
Click the Add Condition button Your phrase will now appear in the Rule box
Choose Insert And or Instert OR to add the word AND or the word OR and another
condition phrase
Click the up or down arrow to the right of the Rule box to move the words up
or down
The last step is to tell the rule what to do - choose your selection from the
dropdown below the Rule box
If you selected Move message to mail box or Send with copy to or Forward you
will need to type the Destination
Click the Finish button
You should now see your new rule in the list
On the right side of the list there are some icons -
Arrow moves the rule either up or down
Pencil edits the rule
Trash can deletes the rule
